When the application work from the hard drive, the path is increased by the name of the directory containing the USB files. That way I can recover at least, the data and the program that works with it. I allways backup at least once in a month to an external hard disk. Later, I synchronize C:\USB16\ with the pen drive when I need to use it in a different machine and also for backup purposes. When working in my machine I ran the applicaton with the PortableApps platform from that directory. I have a mirror copy of my usb contents on disk. For a moment, I thought that is something related with the way I use the application.
